A major £2.7 million redevelopment project has been completed at Exeter Central Station, delivering significant improvements to accessibility, passenger circulation, and customer facilities at one of the South West's busiest transport hubs.

Serving almost three million passengers annually, the station now benefits from a larger concourse area, upgraded smart ticket gates, a redesigned customer support hub, and newly created retail accommodation.

Funding for the scheme was provided through the Industry Revenue Generating Investment (IRGI) programme, managed by Network Rail, alongside support from the Department for Transport. The programme focuses on projects that improve financial performance while reducing long-term costs to government.

The station's expanded concourse and modern ticket gate system have been introduced to tackle congestion issues that have affected commuters and visitors for many years. During periods of high demand, including major sporting fixtures and seasonal events such as Christmas markets, the improvements are expected to ease crowding, improve safety, and maintain efficient passenger movement throughout the station. The upgraded gate infrastructure also helps ensure revenue protection during peak operating periods.

Accessibility and customer service have also been enhanced through the introduction of an open and welcoming assistance area. The redesigned space has been created to better support all passengers, particularly older travellers, families, and those with reduced mobility.

In addition, the new retail unit provides opportunities for local businesses and further strengthens Exeter Central's role as a key destination within the city centre.

Steve Race, Member of Parliament for Exeter, welcomed the investment, highlighting the station's importance as a vital connection point for residents, businesses, students, and visitors travelling throughout the South West. He noted that modern transport infrastructure is essential to supporting Exeter's continued growth and ensuring the station remains capable of accommodating increasing passenger numbers in the future.

Councillor Phil Bialyk, Leader of Exeter City Council, described the project as a valuable investment in the city's transport network. He emphasised that the enhancements would improve the overall passenger experience while supporting Exeter's development as a sustainable and well-connected city. He also recognised the station's growing importance as one of the region's busiest rail facilities and its contribution to the local economy.

Joanna Grew, Joint Route Strategy Director for GWR and Network Rail Western, said the upgrades had been designed with passengers' needs as the primary focus. She explained that the additional space, improved station layout, and new ticketing technology would make journeys safer and more convenient, particularly during the busiest travel periods.

She added that the enlarged concourse and redesigned customer support area would create a more accessible and welcoming environment for all users.

The investment, she said, demonstrates a continued commitment to improving rail services and ensuring Exeter Central remains a key gateway to the city for years to come.
