£25 Million Investment Paves the Way for New Era at Bury Interchange

Passengers using Bury Interchange are set to benefit from a major transformation after plans for the first phase of a comprehensive redevelopment received a £25 million funding boost.

The investment marks a significant milestone in the long-term vision to modernise one of Greater Manchester's busiest transport hubs, improving accessibility, passenger facilities and connectivity while supporting wider regeneration across the town centre.

Planning approval for the scheme was secured in July 2025, with the contract for construction expected to be awarded later this summer.

The initial phase will focus on delivering a new pedestrian footbridge, enhanced access to the Metrolink platform and a range of improvements designed to create a more accessible and user-friendly environment for passengers. The footbridge will play a particularly important role by maintaining tram access when the existing interchange is eventually demolished as part of the wider redevelopment.

According to a report presented to the Bee Network Committee, the improvements will help align Bury's public transport facilities with the standards being delivered across the wider Bee Network, creating a modern gateway for residents and visitors alike.

Work is expected to begin following the planned closure of the existing interchange in late 2027 or early 2028.

Originally opened in 1980, Bury Interchange has served the town for more than four decades. However, planning documents acknowledge that much of the infrastructure has now exceeded its intended operational lifespan, making comprehensive redevelopment increasingly necessary.

The funding announcement forms part of a broader package of transport investment across Greater Manchester.

Alongside the interchange improvements, a further £1.5 million has been allocated to investigate potential future extensions to the Metrolink network in the north-west of the city region.

Transport for Greater Manchester has confirmed that the work is currently at an exploratory stage and will examine a number of potential opportunities, including improved links to Salford Crescent, enhanced connectivity with Salford Quays and MediaCity, as well as longer-term options serving Bolton and Wigan.

Officials have stressed that no decisions have yet been made regarding preferred routes, technologies or delivery methods, with feasibility work continuing over the coming months.

Beyond transport improvements, the Bury Interchange redevelopment is expected to play a key role in the town's wider regeneration ambitions.

Future phases of the masterplan include the construction of a brand-new interchange alongside affordable rental homes, helping to create a vibrant mixed-use destination while encouraging greater use of sustainable public transport.
