Deer Spotted Using New Surrey Green Bridge Just Weeks After Opening

Wildlife has already begun taking advantage of the UK's first heathland green bridge, with newly released footage showing deer safely crossing over the A3 in Surrey.

National Highways shared the images this week, highlighting what it describes as early evidence that the innovative structure is achieving its intended purpose of reconnecting habitats that have been divided for decades.

Posting on LinkedIn, the organisation said: "Proof it works: deer captured on camera. Wildlife safely crossing the UK's first heathland green bridge on the A3. After decades of separation, animals are once again moving freely between habitats, exactly as nature intended."

The crossing, officially named Cockcrow Bridge, opened earlier this month and forms part of efforts to restore links between Ockham and Wisley Commons, which were severed by the busy trunk road.

Designed to support both people and wildlife, the bridge provides a safe route across the A3 for walkers, cyclists and horse riders while also creating an important ecological corridor for local species.

The project is particularly significant because it reconnects areas of lowland heathland, one of the UK's rarest and most threatened habitats. By linking the two commons, the bridge allows wildlife to move more freely between previously fragmented environments, helping to improve biodiversity and habitat resilience.

As well as deer, the structure is expected to benefit a wide range of species including badgers, voles and other small mammals that previously faced significant barriers when attempting to cross the road.

The early sightings have been welcomed as a positive sign that the bridge is already delivering on its environmental objectives, demonstrating how infrastructure projects can be designed to support both transport needs and nature recovery.

With wildlife already making use of the crossing only weeks after its opening, the project could become an important benchmark for future schemes seeking to balance major road infrastructure with environmental enhancement.
