Event Announced to Unveil Next Phase of London’s Bus Safety Standard
The Bus KSI Network, in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and Women in Bus and Coach, has confirmed a major industry event this June to introduce the next stage of London’s Bus Safety Standard (BSS).
Originally introduced in 2018, the BSS has played a key role in improving safety across London’s bus network by setting out progressive requirements for vehicle design and onboard technology. These standards, rolled out in phases between 2019 and 2024, have now been fully implemented across the capital’s fleet.
The upcoming event, taking place on Wednesday 3 June at UTAC Millbrook in Bedfordshire, will provide an opportunity to showcase these advancements through live demonstrations.
Visitors will be able to explore a range of safety features now in operation, including camera-based mirror systems, intelligent speed control, audible warning systems for quieter vehicles, redesigned front-end structures, and advanced braking systems designed to detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Improvements to interior layouts aimed at enhancing passenger safety will also be on display.
Alongside demonstrations, a series of presentations and keynote sessions will outline the next phase of the programme—Bus Safety Standard 2 (BSS2). This updated framework will introduce further requirements for London’s bus fleet in stages between 2027 and 2033.
Future priorities under BSS2 include more ergonomic and accessible driver cabs, measures to address driver fatigue and distraction, safety improvements informed by behavioural science, and technologies aimed at reducing bridge strike incidents.
The event is expected to bring together a wide range of stakeholders from across the transport sector, including manufacturers, operators, policymakers, safety organisations and frontline staff. It will provide a platform for discussion, collaboration and knowledge sharing on the future of bus safety both in the UK and internationally.
