Greater Anglia Completes £700,000 Upgrade Programme at Great Yarmouth Station

Greater Anglia has invested more than £700,000 in a wide-ranging programme of improvements at Great Yarmouth railway station, aimed at enhancing passenger facilities and accessibility ahead of the busy summer season.

The investment forms part of a broader effort to improve customer experience across the rail network while supporting the town's role as a key destination for visitors travelling to the Norfolk coast.

Among the most significant upgrades is the introduction of a new Changing Places toilet, providing improved facilities for disabled passengers and their carers. Delivered in partnership with the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership and Muscular Dystrophy UK, the project received additional support from the Department for Transport.

Passengers are also benefiting from a refurbished waiting room featuring new seating, upgraded flooring, improved heating and lighting systems, fresh decoration and enhanced passenger information displays. Existing toilet facilities, including accessible provision, have also undergone a complete refurbishment.

To support onward travel, a new real-time bus information screen has been installed at the station. Funded jointly with Norfolk County Council, the display provides live departure information for local bus services, helping passengers make smoother connections between rail and bus journeys.

Further improvements include the installation of a public-access defibrillator funded through Greater Anglia's Customer and Community Improvement Fund, alongside the creation of a new Broads Discovery Hub developed with the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership and the Broads Trust. The hub provides information on local attractions, walking routes, wildlife and the region's railway heritage.

An ongoing programme of building restoration is also nearing completion, with works including new glazing, roof repairs and refurbishment of the station canopy to preserve and enhance the historic station environment.

In addition to station improvements, Greater Anglia has introduced four additional weekday peak-time services between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, providing passengers with greater flexibility when travelling between the two destinations.

The operator has also supported community initiatives at the station, including a recent art exhibition created by blind and partially sighted artists, aimed at raising awareness of sight loss and accessibility issues.

Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia's Infrastructure and Major Projects Director, said the investment is helping to create a more welcoming, accessible and user-friendly station while improving travel options for passengers.

The improvements form part of Greater Anglia's wider strategy to enhance rail services across the region and align more closely with Network Rail Anglia and c2c under the emerging Great British Railways framework, with a focus on improving coordination, infrastructure delivery and customer experience.
