National Highways Puts More Than 55 Acres of Devon Land Up for Auction

National Highways is bringing more than 55 acres of surplus land in Devon to auction as part of a wider programme aimed at releasing assets no longer required for the operation of England’s strategic road network.

The sites will be offered for sale on June 23 through BTG Eddisons Property Auctions, forming part of a national portfolio comprising more than 20 lots spread across 15 counties.

Among the most significant offerings is a 26-acre area of pastureland alongside the A303 near Honiton. Situated within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the site carries a guide price of £185,000 and is expected to attract interest from a range of buyers.

A second major lot near Honiton includes approximately 24 acres of mixed woodland and pasture adjacent to the A30. With access provided through a nearby business park and Starbucks café, the land has been given a guide price of £160,000.

Smaller parcels are also included in the auction, including around five acres beside the M5 near Tiverton, guided at £25,000, and a third of an acre adjoining the A38 close to Plymouth, with a guide price of £3,000.

Will Thompson, director at BTG Eddisons Property Auctions, said the combination of location, accessibility and future potential was expected to generate strong interest from buyers across the South West.

He noted that roadside land opportunities of this scale are relatively uncommon and could appeal to those looking to expand agricultural holdings, support environmental initiatives or secure land with longer-term development prospects.

The sale forms part of National Highways’ ongoing strategy to dispose of land that is no longer needed for operational purposes. Funds raised through the programme are reinvested into maintaining, improving and modernising England’s motorways and major A-road network.

National Highways said the approach helps ensure surplus land is returned to productive use while supporting continued investment in the country’s transport infrastructure.
