Network Rail Consulting Lands $26 Million Deal to Support Expansion of Seattle's Light Rail Network

Three-year contract will see UK rail specialist strengthen asset management, maintenance and operational performance across Sound Transit's rapidly growing Link system.

Network Rail Consulting (NRC) has secured a major contract in the United States after being appointed by Sound Transit to deliver specialist asset management support across Seattle's expanding Link light rail network.

The three-year agreement, valued at approximately $26 million, will see the consultancy work alongside the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority to improve the management, maintenance and long-term performance of critical rail infrastructure as the network continues its significant expansion programme.

The appointment further strengthens Network Rail Consulting's growing presence in North America, where transit authorities are increasingly seeking specialist expertise to maximise reliability, improve operational efficiency and extend the lifespan of increasingly complex rail assets.

Supporting the next phase of network growth

As Sound Transit continues to extend its Link light rail system, maintaining reliability while integrating new infrastructure has become a key operational priority.

Under the contract, Network Rail Consulting will help develop more robust asset management practices across a wide range of operational systems, supporting long-term investment planning and improving day-to-day maintenance performance.

Its work will span numerous engineering disciplines, including track, signalling, traction power systems, overhead line equipment, telecommunications, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), light rail vehicles and station infrastructure, including fire safety, emergency ventilation and building systems.

Building a smarter maintenance strategy

A significant element of the programme will focus on modernising maintenance practices through improved planning, digital asset management and workforce development.

Network Rail Consulting will support the implementation of enterprise asset management systems while helping develop maintenance strategies, quality assurance processes and reliability programmes designed to reduce service disruptions and improve passenger experience.

The consultancy will also deliver specialist training programmes and establish competence management frameworks for safety-critical roles, ensuring new systems and procedures are effectively embedded across the organisation.

Rather than concentrating solely on infrastructure maintenance, the programme is intended to strengthen Sound Transit's overall asset management capability as the network evolves.
