New M4 Bridge to Reconnect Bristol and Yate After Major Rebuilding Project

A major transport link between Bristol and Yate is set to reopen this week following the completion of a multi-million-pound bridge replacement project over the M4 motorway.

The new A432 Badminton Road bridge will initially welcome pedestrians and cyclists when it opens on Friday afternoon, before being fully accessible to motorists from Saturday morning.

Its reopening marks the end of a significant infrastructure programme that began after inspections in 2023 uncovered serious structural defects in the original bridge.

Built in 1966, the ageing structure was deemed unsuitable for continued use, leading National Highways to conclude that complete demolition and reconstruction was the most effective long-term solution.

Before its closure, the bridge carried approximately 16,000 vehicles each day and served as an important connection between communities in South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Its absence has forced drivers, businesses and residents to rely on alternative routes while construction work was carried out.

National Highways has praised the pace of the project, noting that the bridge has been rebuilt considerably faster than would normally be expected for a scheme of this scale.

Sean Walsh, Route Manager at National Highways, said the organisation had worked intensively since the decision was made to replace the structure. He noted that the project had been delivered in around two-and-a-half years, significantly shorter than the typical five-year timescale associated with comparable bridge replacement programmes.

The newly constructed bridge measures 46.5 metres in length and 20 metres in width, spanning one of the busiest sections of the M4 motorway. Earlier this month, overnight lane closures were required on the motorway to facilitate final preparations ahead of the reopening.

While the bridge itself is ready for traffic, associated highway improvements are continuing. Resurfacing works on the A432 corridor towards Yate are expected to remain underway until March 2027.

Local leaders have welcomed the restoration of the route, highlighting its importance to residents, businesses and commuters.

South Gloucestershire Council leaders Maggie Tyrell and Ian Boulton described the reopening as a significant milestone for the area. They said the bridge provides a vital connection between Yate and Bristol, helping people access employment, education, shopping and essential services while restoring a key route for local businesses.

The council leaders also acknowledged the scale of the challenge faced by engineers and project teams. They noted that the bridge replacement was not part of a planned infrastructure

programme and required an entirely new design and delivery process to be developed following the discovery of structural problems in the original bridge.

Throughout the project, South Gloucestershire Council worked alongside National Highways to help minimise disruption and support traffic management measures on surrounding roads.

Both organisations expressed gratitude to local residents, businesses and road users for their patience during the construction period, recognising the inconvenience caused by the closure of such an important transport link.

With the bridge now reconnected to the road network on both sides of the motorway, its reopening is expected to provide immediate benefits for thousands of daily users and restore a key route that has been unavailable for more than two years.

The completion of the project represents one of the most significant highway infrastructure achievements in the region in recent years, reconnecting communities and supporting future travel and economic activity across South Gloucestershire.
