Prince William Champions Climate Innovation After Arriving at London Event by Electric Bus

The Prince of Wales underlined his commitment to sustainable transport and climate action by arriving at a major environmental event in London aboard an electric bus.

Prince William travelled to the Guildhall for a gathering of environmental leaders, policymakers and innovators as part of London Climate Action Week, using the zero-emission vehicle as a symbolic reminder of the role cleaner transport can play in tackling climate change and improving air quality.

Speaking at the event, the Prince reflected on the progress made through the Earthshot Prize, the global initiative he launched in 2020 to accelerate environmental solutions and support projects capable of repairing and protecting the planet.

Addressing delegates, including London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, Prince William struck a balance between urgency and optimism, arguing that while the environmental challenges facing the world remain significant, practical solutions are already emerging.

He said the work being undertaken by Earthshot Prize finalists and winners had left him feeling "more optimistic than ever" about the future, while warning that future generations would judge how today's leaders responded to the evidence available to them.

"One day people will look back at this decade and ask: when the evidence was clear, what did we do with it?" he told attendees.

The Earthshot Prize, which awards £1 million annually to five projects addressing environmental challenges, has now reached its halfway point. According to organisers, supported initiatives have already delivered measurable benefits, including cutting emissions equivalent to removing four million cars from the road and helping to protect, restore or improve more than 85 million hectares of forests, rivers and land.

Future projects supported by the programme include advances in battery technology for renewable energy storage, climate-resilient farming methods and the development of sustainable alternatives for the fashion industry.

The event also highlighted the role cities can play in delivering environmental improvements, with London frequently cited as an example of how transport policies can contribute to cleaner air and lower emissions.

Sir Sadiq Khan used the occasion to discuss the health impacts associated with poor air quality and the measures being implemented across the capital to reduce pollution from road transport.

The Mayor also praised Prince William's involvement in environmental issues, describing his commitment as genuine and long-standing.

Among the other speakers was conservationist and broadcaster Robert Irwin, who stressed the importance of combining urgency with optimism when addressing climate challenges.

Earthshot Prize Chief Executive Jason Knauf echoed that sentiment, arguing that despite often polarised debates around climate policy, focusing on practical solutions remains essential.

While acknowledging the scale of the environmental challenge, Prince William encouraged delegates to focus on proven successes and the opportunities to expand them.

He pointed to examples such as habitat restoration, emissions reduction and clean air initiatives as evidence that progress is possible when innovation is matched by action.

The Prince concluded by challenging governments, businesses and communities to build on those successes, asking whether society would seize the opportunity to replicate solutions that are already demonstrating measurable results.

His arrival by electric bus provided a fitting backdrop to a wider message: that achieving climate goals will require not only technological innovation, but also visible leadership and a willingness to embrace more sustainable ways of living and travelling.
