Severn Trent rolls out pipe bursting technology to modernise ageing network

Severn Trent is expanding its use of trenchless technology as part of its AMP8 investment programme, deploying specialist pipe bursting equipment to replace ageing water infrastructure with reduced disruption to communities.

The utility has purchased four Grundoburst 400G systems from Tracto, enabling engineers to carry out underground pipe renewals without the need for extensive excavation works.

Pipe bursting is a rehabilitation technique that allows a new pipeline to be installed along the route of an existing one. As the replacement pipe is drawn through the ground, the old pipe is fractured and displaced into the surrounding soil, significantly reducing the need for open trenches and associated disruption.

The move aligns with the water sector’s increasing focus on trenchless construction methods during AMP8, helping companies improve efficiency while minimising environmental impact and inconvenience for residents.

According to Tracto, the Grundoburst 400G units were selected because they can accommodate a wide range of pipe diameters, from 2in to 10in, and are capable of working through curved alignments thanks to their ladder rod technology.

To support the adoption of the new equipment, Severn Trent invested heavily in workforce development throughout 2025, with around 150 employees completing specialist training programmes. Trenchless expert Arnie Bailey also provided practical support during the early stages of deployment, assisting site teams as they carried out their first projects using the technique.

One of the first schemes to benefit from the new technology was undertaken in Bagnall, near Stoke-on-Trent. There, crews renewed approximately 950m of water infrastructure along a route that had experienced persistent burst mains and reliability issues.

The successful completion of the project has strengthened confidence in the approach and demonstrated its potential for wider application across Severn Trent’s network.

“Arnie was very knowledgeable and competent and was really helpful in assisting us with the first burst in Bagnall. The team has successfully burst the whole job now and are extremely happy with the kit. This technique and rig will be a revelation for us over the coming four years left in AMP8.”

With significant infrastructure renewal targets to meet over the remainder of AMP8, Severn Trent expects trenchless pipe bursting to become an increasingly valuable tool in delivering upgrades efficiently while reducing disruption for customers and road users.
