New 24/7 digital hub at Birmingham Airport will use artificial intelligence, live monitoring and real-time data to improve aircraft turnarounds, safety and operational resilience across the UK and Ireland.

Swissport has unveiled a new Integrated Control Centre (ICC) at Birmingham Airport, marking a significant step forward in the digital transformation of airport ground handling across the UK and Ireland.

The state-of-the-art facility will operate around the clock, bringing together live operational oversight, artificial intelligence, telematics and video monitoring to provide real-time visibility of ground operations across Swissport's regional network.

The company says the investment will strengthen operational resilience, improve aircraft turnaround performance and enhance safety as passenger demand continues to grow.

A Digital Nerve Centre for Airport Operations

Located at Birmingham Airport, the 24-hour Integrated Control Centre acts as a central command hub for Swissport's UK and Ireland operations.

The facility combines operational control systems with advanced technologies including AI-supported monitoring, telematics, live CCTV and geo-fencing, allowing teams to monitor and manage more than 2,000 pieces of ground support equipment from a single location.

By providing a live overview of equipment availability and operational activity, the centre enables faster decision-making and more effective deployment of resources during routine operations and periods of disruption.

Improving Safety Through Technology

Safety sits at the heart of the new facility.

Swissport has introduced driver safety cameras and vehicle telematics across its fleet to improve operational awareness while supporting safer driving practices on the airfield.

The company said the technology has been developed in consultation with employee representatives and introduced through an agreed framework with relevant stakeholders, ensuring operational improvements are delivered alongside workforce engagement.

The combination of live monitoring and operational analytics is expected to help identify potential risks earlier while supporting continuous improvements in safety performance.

Boosting Operational Resilience

Airports are increasingly relying on digital technology to maintain performance during periods of disruption caused by weather, technical issues or seasonal peaks.

Swissport believes the new control centre will allow operational teams to respond more rapidly by providing real-time visibility of equipment deployment, staffing levels and operational priorities.

The company also plans to expand the facility's capabilities ahead of the 2026/27 winter season, introducing live monitoring of aircraft de-icing operations to improve coordination during adverse weather conditions.

Supporting Future Growth

Karen Cox, Chief Executive Officer of Swissport UK & Ireland, said the investment forms part of the company's wider strategy to improve operational performance through smarter use of technology while creating new skilled roles at Birmingham Airport.

The Integrated Control Centre is expected to play a central role as Swissport continues modernising its operations through automation, digital connectivity and data-driven decision making.

A Global Ground Handling Leader

Swissport is one of the world's largest providers of airport ground services, operating at more than 300 airports across 49 countries.

Its services include passenger handling, aircraft turnaround support, ramp operations, cargo handling and airport hospitality for airlines around the world.

The Birmingham facility forms part of the company's broader digital transformation programme, which aims to improve efficiency, strengthen resilience and support the aviation industry's recovery as global passenger numbers continue to rise.

A Glimpse of the Airport of Tomorrow

As airports become increasingly connected, facilities such as Swissport's Integrated Control Centre offer a glimpse into the future of ground operations.

By combining artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring and predictive operational management, the industry is moving towards smarter, more responsive airports capable of handling growing passenger demand while maintaining high standards of safety and operational performance.

For Swissport, the new Birmingham hub is more than just a control room—it's the digital command centre underpinning the next generation of airport ground handling.
