Technical Fault Leaves Hundreds of Santander Cycle Docking Stations Out of Service

Transport for London is working to resolve a technical issue that has disrupted the Santander Cycles network, leaving almost a quarter of the capital’s docking stations temporarily out of service.
The problem has affected around 190 of the scheme’s 800 docking locations across London, with stations impacted in areas including Aldgate, Knightsbridge, Camden and Elephant and Castle.
According to TfL, the disruption is being caused by a connectivity fault that has prevented some cycle journeys from being recorded correctly. In some cases, this has resulted in users being charged incorrectly after their hires failed to register as completed.
The transport authority said the number of affected docking stations had been reduced from 251 earlier in the day as engineers worked to restore the network.
TfL has published details of the affected locations on its website and said customers using physical Santander Cycle keys can still hire bicycles despite the technical difficulties.
A spokesperson for the organisation apologised for the disruption and confirmed that any incorrect charges linked to the issue would be automatically refunded once the problem has been resolved.
The spokesperson added that teams are working urgently to restore full service across the network and that all affected journeys will be reviewed as part of the recovery process.
The Santander Cycles scheme has been a key part of London's transport network since its launch in 2010. Originally introduced under Barclays sponsorship, the cycle hire service was rebranded as Santander Cycles in 2015 following a new sponsorship agreement with the banking group.
The latest outage highlights the importance of the digital infrastructure that supports one of the UK's largest public bicycle hire schemes, which serves thousands of journeys across the capital every day.
